IMI's "Fully Loaded" Vibration Switch - Model 685B

From the Vibration Analyst to the Controls Engineer, IMI’s model 685B electronic vibration switch has all the bases covered in the protection of critical machinery.

 

Application Engineers, like those of us here at IMI Sensors, often hear similar problems and questions expressed by our customers over and over again: “safety folks won’t let us go there anymore we need permanent mount sensors”, “I need a simple way to trend machine vibration on a PLC”, “how can I verify that my accelerometers are working correctly?”

 

At the top of the list, however: “We have these vibration switches and when they trip we have no idea why or what caused it. The machine seems to run fine so we just re-set the switch and re-start the machine.”

 

Often times old fashioned mechanical vibration switches are used to protect critical machinery. A mechanical switch relies on a spring latch system to trip. They require no external power and are the most simplistic of devices. Turn the dial, set your threshold and wait for the switch to trip.

 

But what happens when that switch does trip? Why did it trip? Was there a real vibration problem? Was it a transient event like a truck passing by that caused the trip? What was my vibration level just before my relay tripped?

 

A mechanical switch cannot answer these questions.

 

IMI’s model 685B electronic vibration switch is “fully loaded” with all the features one needs to not only recognize a potential vibration issue on critical machinery, but also diagnose and fix the problem. The model 685B switch features an internal accelerometer and has a terminal strip offering the critical components of vibration monitoring and predictive maintenance: 

  • Dual relays allow for alert and alarm vibration trip levels
  • Adjustable time delays on each relay prevent false trips from transient events
  • 4-20 mA overall vibration output can be routed to a control system (PLC, DCS, SCADA)
  • Analog raw vibration signal output for FFT spectrum analysis with portable data collector

 

Most of our fully loaded 685B electronic vibration switches are approved for use in hazardous areas and have Class 1 Div 2 certification through CSA. IMI also has Div 1 switches as well and each switch has remote reset capability.
